Ko Ni, a prominent Muslim lawyer working for the National League for Democracy (NLD), was shot at point blank at Mingaladon Airport as he waited for his car on return from Indonesia as a member of an official delegation. He had worked closely with NLD leaders and advocated for harmonious living among all faiths regardless of color or creed. Some of his opponents accused him of giving support to the Muslims in Rakhine State and turning the country into an Islamic state. As a result, some observers say his murder was a hate killing. Several former military officershave been implicated in the assassination. The case is still ongoing in Myanmar courts.
